Mayor of Randwick
Introduction to kensotraffic.com.au
For a long time the residents of the western parts of Kensington and Kingsford have had concerns about the infiltration of traffic flow into their residential areas. As a result Council has examined the matter a number of times with the community.
Currently there are a number of changes either proposed or already occurring which may have a significant influence on traffic flows in the West Kensington/Kingsford (click here for map) area.
In 2004 the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority presented a proposal to Randwick City Council, and the community, to construct south-facing ramps on Southern Cross Drive at the Gardeners Road overpass. The purpose of the proposed ramps was to provide motorists with direct access to and from Southern Cross Drive and the M5 Motorway at this point. This, the RTA stated, will improve access to local and regional places, reduce congestion at key locations to the north of the proposal and consequently improve travel times and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. This proposal by the RTA has the potential to alter traffic movements within the Randwick City Local Government Area (LGA), which will impact on the local community.
Large residential developments with increased population densities are proposed in the Green Park area ( including the Zetland and Victoria Park areas ) just west of the Randwick LGA. These developments also have the potential to impact on the local Randwick community.
Council have appointed a traffic consultant to undertake a review of the external impacts upon traffic flow in the area (including the RTA’s proposal proposal for Gardeners Road ramps and, the City of Sydney’s push to increase population densities on Randwick’s doorstep and the proposal to limit eastbound traffic flow along Lenthall Street, Kensington.. The consultant has to identify the effect that this factors will have on the local road network, local traffic movements and the amenity of local residents.
It is Council’s expectation that through this traffic assessment a greater appreciation of the issues involved, the potential traffic impacts and the opportunity to develop remedial treatments can be gained.
