Traffic numbers taken in University vacations

Posted by tass james at Jul 21, 2009 07:44 PM
Since the traffic numbers have been taken in University vacation they ignore forty thousand students who travel to UNSW daily. Accordingly even the best modelling is useless if the figures used are inaccurate, and surely no meaningful conclusions can be drawn.

Was any consideration given to the origin and destination study done by the RTA in 2005? Surely this is very relevant in this context.

Also, how can anyone predict when the ramps will be built? The current state government is facing an election and the current local member and Minister for Planning is a strong supporter of the ramps. How much notice did we receive last time the ramps were on the agenda?

Traffic Counts in university holidays

Posted by Tony Lehmann at Jul 22, 2009 07:18 PM
Thanks for the observation re counts being taken during uni holidays. This occurred as a consequence of the timing of the appointment of the consultant late last year. Council could have delayed the commencement of the whole study from November 08 to March 09 in order to gather the uni data. However, it was deemed more important to commence the study as soon as possible.

Council was aware of this matter and it has also has been previously raised with Council. A commitment has been made to repeat a number of the counts to assess the difference in impact as a result of the university generated traffic.

This assessment will from part of the final report to Council.

Regarding the RTA's modelling for the proposed ramps, this data was taken into account and is referred to in the report.

Modelling in university holidays

The only reason I can see why Council would deem it preferable not to wait until Univerity of NSW returned from holidays, is that it did not care for a valid result, but rather one that ticked the boxes to justify a preconceived outcome.

Traffic numbers taken in University vacations

Do you mean that it was deemed more important to justify the closure of Lenthall st than to do a valid study with the appropriate traffic including the forty thousand students attending UNSW daily?

The origin and destination study I am referring to is the one in 2005 where the RTA manned the entries and exits of the defined west Kingsford area to determine how much of the traffic was due to rat runners. Could you please post the result of this.

Can you please point out where the study indicates the width of the relevant streets and the speed of traffic on them? This is obviously a vital safety issue/

Will Council guarantee that they will not remove parking from outside ratepayers homes in order to accomodate rat runners?

speed and volume of traffic along Tunstall ave

Posted by sumati ahuja at Nov 23, 2009 12:13 AM
We would like to draw your attention to the VOLUME and SPEED of traffic along TUNSTALL AVE, that comes into and OFF of Gardeners road, traveling to and fro from Day Ave.

It has become a DAILY DANGER to my family - with two small children to get in and out of our car.

Most mornings we have to wait several minutes for a break in the traffic before we can get the children safely in the car! Peak hour traffic along this stretch of Tunstall Ave has increased greatly.

It is appalling that this leg of Tunstall avenue has become a thoroughfare for vehicles and the speeds are well above the 50km/hr limit!! There have been several 'near misses' with vehicles traveling at high speed along this stretch.

Unfortunately the traffic studies commissioned so far do not pay heed to the speed of traffic along these residential streets!
